I really like your topic. I also like that you are looking at not only grades and test data, but attendance. Attendance can be a problem on middle school campuses, and I think there is a correlation between participation in extra-curricular activities and attendance. I am interested to hear about your results. You may also consider including some 7th grade students in case your study has to carry over into the next school year. Even though they didn't play sports in 6th grade, you can still analyze their data and attendance information. Just a thought.
